Spring is an opportune time to explore the many forms of entertainment available in the City of St. John’s. Whether it’s a musical performance or an evening of entertainment benefiting a worthy cause, there is something for everyone to enjoy this spring season. Here are some examples of springtime entertainment in St. John’s.
2010 Juno Awards
The Juno Awards honour the best in the Canadian music industry. This annual event, first held in 1964, is a big night for Canada’s recording artists. The 2010 awards show will be broadcast from Mile One Centre in downtown St. John’s on April 18. The city last hosted the Junos in 2002.
The Juno Awards promises to be a full-filled, high-energy show packed with a number of highly anticipated performances and special honours. Artists scheduled to perform during the show include Billy Talent, Blue Rodeo and Michael Bublé , who leads the nominations with nods in six categories. Canadian rock icon Bryan Adams will receive the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award for his fundraising efforts over the years, while legendary rock band April Wine will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
The week leading up to the Juno Awards telecast will be filled with events showcasing the diverse talent of Canadian musicians. These include songwriters’ circles, a Jazz and Blues night and the Juno Cup, a celebrity hockey game played by NHL greats and Canadian musicians.
Concerts at Mile One Centre
The spring months will see a number of rising stars and world renowned artists wow fans at Mile One Centre. These musical acts include:
Art Garfunkel - April 9, 2010. Once part of the powerhouse singing duo Simon & Garfunkel, Art Garfunkel is scheduled to perform old favourites and new solo material during a special show at Mile One Centre.
Hedley - April 20, 2010. This pop-rock band will stop in St. John’s, Newfoundland as part of a cross-country tour to promote their third studio album, The Show Must Go On.
The Steve Miller Band - June 8, 2010. Steve Miller and his rock band have included St. John’s, Newfoundland in their Atlantic Canadian tour this spring.
RCMP Klondike Night
On April 23, 2010, the RCMP will host its Annual Klondike Night at its St. John’s headquarters. All proceeds from this evening of music and entertainment will go to the Air Cadet League of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Children’s Wish Foundation.
Klondike Night is open to the public, age 19 years and older. There is no admission fee, but tickets for grand prize draws and other door prizes are available upon entry. Entertainment at Klondike Night will include a casino, a bar, a silent auction, live music and a buffet.
Hot Soup, Cool Jazz
On April 20, 2010, the St. John’s Convention Centre holds the 3rd Annual Hot Soup, Cool Jazz, an event aimed at raising awareness of the housing needs of impoverished and at-risk youth. Some of the finest chefs and restaurants in St. John’s will provide soup for a gourmet soup tasting competition. There will be a bar on hand offering a selection of fine wines. The event will also include both a silent and live auction and a jazz concert.
